The Prickly Ash Bark available from Starwest Botanicals is kosher certified by the Kosher Certification Service. Prickly Ash Bark, known by the Latin name of Zanthoxylum americanum, is commonly used for chronic rheumatism, skin diseases, blood impurities and typhoid. Prickly Ash Bark comes from a tree or large shrub that is usually grown in the Southeastern United States and has distinctive spiny lumps on the bark. Another common name for this plant is the Toothache Tree, because it may cause the mouth and tongue, even the teeth, to become numb if the bark or leaves were chewed, relieving the pain from a toothache. Zanthoxylum americanum may help to ease gas and cramps in the digestive tract, to ease arthritic symptoms, for liver function and to produce perspiration. Zanthoxylum americanum should not be taken if you are pregnant.
