Artichoke Leaf (Cynara scolymus )

Latin Name: Cynara scolymus
Common Names: Artichoke Leaf

Artichoke leaf, also known as Cynara scolymus are the spike-tipped petals of the well known vegetable, the globe artichoke. All of the different species of Cynara look like thistles, because they are tall, spiny short-lived perennial plants whose large flower heads open exposing seeds when the Cynara scolymus goes through its decline each growing season.

Artichoke leafs form as scales on the bud of artichokes that you typically find for sale at your local grocery. Artichokes and artichoke leaf are actually the flower buds of the herb, and are deliciously edible, as is the base of the bud, known as the heart. Artichokes require a warm climate for good growth, and are typically grown in California and the Mediterranean countries.

Artichokes from which we produce our bulk wholesale herbs can be grown from seed or by various plant propagation methods. The height of harvest for the buds of the artichoke herb occurs in the spring.

Artichoke leaf organic bulk herbs come in a cut and sifted form for your convenience. The Cynara scolymus herbs are cut to less than a quarter inch in length. After this, they are sifted so that the tiniest particles are removed and you are left with uniformly sized dried herbs. We also offer these bulk herbs for sale in a powdered form when you need bulk artichoke leaf in a very fine size.

Artichoke leaf is commonly used to promote digestion, and it may help to reduce free radicals. The leaves of Cynara scolymus are typically gathered right at the end of the plant's growing season.

It is what I needed

Bitter plants seem to have a special affinity for livers and gallbladders.
I am treating a grumpy gallbladder and make tea of this powder and sometimes put the powder into smoothies or some other food that can mask the truly powerful bitterness. I am not taking it for the fun of it so the bitterness, to me, is just a sign of good medicine.
