Turmeric (Curcumas longa)One of the most easily recognizable spices used in middle eastern cuisine, turmeric (Curcumas longa) has a slightly bitter, warm taste. A close relation to ginger, the turmeric shrub is primarily cultivated in southeast Asia and parts of Africa. It is often used as part of food seasonings for spicy curries and pungent mustards. Like other strong organic spices, turmeric is typically used in a ground form for culinary purposes.
Although turmeric has a particularly distinctive flavor, it does diminish over time. To insure the most robust taste from this organic seasoning, it is a good idea to purchase enough for use rather than long-term storage. Use an airtight container kept away from direct sunlight to maximize the lifespan of turmeric's potency.
Turmeric is more than a popular organic seasoning, however, it's distinctive orange-yellow color has made it useful in fabric dyes.

- Q: Is the Organic Turmeric Root Powder, that says it is from India, packaged in India or in the USA? Is it USDA certified organic, or is it certified organic by an overseas administration?
- A: All of our herbs and spices are packaged here in the USA, at our facilities in California. For organic certification both the grower (in India, in this case) and the processor (us) need to be certified organic. The USDA does not certify products directly, they set the standards and a third-party does the certification according to their standards. Our products are certified to USDA standards by QAI, which is a US-based company. The overseas certification varies but, again, can only be from a company that has been accredited to certify the products.
In addition, we have an in-house lab that tests for things like product identification, heavy metals, pathogens, and other contaminants. - starwest staff
