Apple Pie Spiced Cider

1 1/4 quarts apple cider
3 tbsp firmly packed light brown sugar
7 whole cinnamon sticks
1 tsp ground allspice
1/2 tsp ground ginger
Pinch of ground cloves
Pinch of freshly grated nutmeg
Pinch of salt
1/4 cup brandy (optional)

In a medium saucepan, whisk together cider, sugar, one cinnamon stick, spices, and salt. Bring to a simmer over medium heat; pour in brandy, if desired. Strain into pitcher; discard solids. Serve in mugs, garnished with cinnamon sticks.

Serves six.

Health tip #1: Ginger

Ginger is often used to relieve nausea. It also has anti-inflammatory properties. Because it is calming to the gastrointestinal tract, it may cause fewer problems than synthetic anti-inflammatory drugs.
