Cloves Recipes and Remedies

If you primarily associate clove with pumpkin spiced lattes, I’m thrilled to report that there is a whole world of untapped recipes and remedies that feature clove in subtle and surprising ways. Below are several easy ways to bring more clove into your meals, beverages and body care this season!

Cooking with Clove

Whole Cloves Recipe

Eating stewed apples on an empty stomach can ignite digestive fire and promote appetite. Apples support healthy bile flow, which is what keeps digestion moving and supports regular bowel movements.

CLOVE SPICED APPLES

1 apple, cored and chopped

2-3 whole cloves

¼ cup water

Pinch of salt

½ teaspoon ghee or coconut oil (optional)

Sprinkle of ground cinnamon or cardamom (optional)

Squeeze of lime (optional)

  1. Bring ¼ cup water to a boil.
  2. Add chopped apple, and optional pinch of salt.
  3. Cover and simmer on low for 10 minutes.
  4. When most of the water has cooked off, it should be ready. The apples will be soft and translucent.
  5. Serve as is, or add ½ tsp ghee, a sprinkle of cinnamon/cardamom and a touch of fresh lime juice.

Clove Seasoning Recipe (Two Ways)

In the world of Ayurveda and of Indian cuisine, a thoughtful spice blend is called a masala. Not only do these spice blends bring delicious flavor to our foods, but they also naturally aid digestion. There are many different types of masalas that serve different purposes and compliment different dishes. Below you will find two versatile spice blends.

#1 SWEET DIGESTIVE SPICE BLEND WITH CLOVE

Add this sweet masala to oatmeal, yogurt, almond butter toast, teas, warm milk, or baked goods.

1 teaspoon Organic Clove powder

2 teaspoon Organic Cinnamon powder

2 teaspoon Organic Cardamom powder

2 teaspoon Organic Ginger powder

2 teaspoon Organic Cane Sugar (optional)

#2 SAVORY DIGESTIVE SPICE MIX WITH CLOVE

Add this savory masala to soups, stews, veggies, meats and avocado toast.

1 teaspoon Organic Clove

2 teaspoon Organic Cumin

2 teaspoon Organic Coriander

1 teaspoon Organic Fennel

1 teaspoon Organic Black Pepper

½ teaspoon Salt (optional)

Drinking Clove

Clove Water Benefits

Clove water may help support healthy digestion by gently kindling your inner fire while promoting warmth and circulation throughout the entire body. Add spices, like whole clove, to your water may actually support more effective hydration.

Two Clove Water Recipes

Below are two of my favorite ways to enjoy clove as an easy everyday beverage.

#1 SIMPLE CLOVE WATER RECIPE

Drop 2-3 whole cloves (and maybe one cardamom pod) into your water bottle for a slow and enlivening infusion as you refill throughout the day. Use room temperature water, or hot water if your vessel is insulated.

#2 CLOVE CARDAMOM REHYDRATION ELIXIR RECIPE

¼ teaspoon clove powder

¼ teaspoon cardamom powder

1 teaspoon coconut sugar

A pinch of mineral salt

20 ounces water

Combine all ingredients and stir thoroughly. For maximum absorption, select water that is room temperature rather than cold water.

Remedies Featuring Clove

Clove for Mind & Body Care

In addition to consuming clove, it can also be used in mind and body care remedies. As an Ayurvedic Practitioner, I often recommend various types of clove paste for seasonal care and to relieve excess doshas in the head — especially kapha dosha.

CLOVE FACE PASTE REMEDY

This powerful remedy activates localized agni to promote healthy circulation around the face and head, which may bring about a sense of clarity and lightness to the mind. Clove paste is believed to help prevent stagnation and help ease excess mucus.

½ teaspoon ground clove

½ teaspoon ground coriander

½ teaspoon ground lavender (optional)

Combine all ingredients and add just enough water to make a paste, starting with just about 1 teaspoon of water and thinning with more water is necessary. Apply to the face — focusing on the space above the eyebrows (avoiding the third eye center), moving down the temples and along the cheekbones up to the sides of the nose. Upon application, you will notice a mild to medium burning sensation — this means it’s working. After about 10 minutes or so, gently remove the mask with a washcloth. Pat dry and moisturize as desired.

CLOVE ESSENTIAL OIL BENEFITS

Clove essential oil brings invigoration with its spicy, warming, slightly fruity and woody scent. Adding a few drops of clove to a steam shower may energize the body and enliven the senses, while also helping to relieve stagnation and congestion. Clove essential oil is said to balance kapha and vata doshas.
